Embodied Healing

May 2025

"Healing happens in our bodies. Trauma, stress, emotions… they are all stored in your body which means that intentional connection, movement, and processing must involve your body." - Bessel Van Der Kolk

In our quick-fix society, we are so often looking for the “right” therapist or intervention to help our children with their regulation and behavior, and we want results NOW.   It makes sense - parents are managing multiple stressors, and have their own needs for peace and calm.  However, meaningful growth and change happens when children are developmentally ready, and only in the context of a secure relationship.   Change also happens when we incorporate the body - something our society is just beginning to remember.  This is especially true for children, who learn through movement, play, sensory experiences and active engagement.

Every body and nervous system is unique in its needs, and finding the right healing modality can take time.  However,  resetting the nervous system can lead to some of the most profound changes for our children.

What healing modality is right for your child?  The one they enjoy, will engage in, and the one that offers moments of regulation.

Some ideas to consider:

Art Making/Therapy - allows for sensory experiences, exploration and creative expression.

Dance Therapy - offers opportunities for expression, rhythmic movement, and joy.

Equine Therapy - builds confidence and trust, uses rhythmic movement and connection with a co-regulating animal.

Improv/Theater- builds flexibility, connection, works on social engagement, communication, and timing.

Listening/Music Therapy - music is powerful, and listening to or making music can be regulating for the nervous system.

Occupational Therapy - uses the regulating affects of a positive relationship to work on a variety of skills such as  emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, executive functions, interoception, balance and coordination.

Yoga Therapy - Helps kids tune in to their body, find mindful movement and relaxation.

At Thriving Parents Collective, we are pioneering a virtual therapeutic program called Thriving Together. Created by experienced Occupational Therapists and Parent Coaches, this therapeutic approach accounts for each child’s unique profile, as well as the strengths of the parent.   By participating in activities together, both child and parent will experience attachment, regulation, and joy.  Want to know more?   Check out the website and book a discovery call!
